Chess Foundations — Free 10-Lesson Chess Course
Learn chess from zero in ten short editorial lessons: the board, every piece, checkmate, castling, promotion, and your first game plan. Free, interactive, no signup.
Chess Foundations is a free ten-lesson course for complete beginners. Each lesson pairs a short written explanation with an interactive board, so you practise the idea in the same breath you read about it. No account is required to read the lessons.
The course covers, in order: 1. The Chessboard; 2. The Pieces and Their Values; 3. How Pawns Move; 4. Rooks and Bishops; 5. Knights and Queens; 6. The King; 7. Check, Checkmate, and Stalemate; 8. Castling; 9. Special Pawn Moves; 10. Your First Game Plan.
Start at lesson one and work forward. By the end you will know how every piece moves, how a game is won, drawn, or lost, how castling and promotion work, and how to choose sensible first moves without memorising opening theory.
Our courses run from the rules of the board to endgame technique. Lessons are interactive: you read a short passage, then play the position out on a real board before moving on.
