How do takebacks and resigning work?
When you can take a move back, when you can't, and how to resign cleanly.
Two of the most-used controls in any chess game. Here's how each works on Endgame Society.
Tap the flag icon (labeled Resign ) in the game controls below the board. You'll get a quick confirmation tap, and then the game ends as a loss for you.
You can resign at any point in a game — there's no penalty beyond the normal rating change for a loss.
Tip — Resigning a clearly lost position is good etiquette and saves both players time. Just don't resign positions that look bad but actually have defensive resources.
When you're playing Dawn, you can take back your last move once per game. The button appears in the game controls after you make a move.
Important : using a takeback in a rated game vs Dawn turns the game unrated . You'll see a message confirming "This game is now unrated" — no rating change either way when it ends.
This rule keeps the rated ladder honest. If you want to experiment freely, play unrated from the start and use as many takebacks as you'd like.
Takebacks in PvP would require both players to agree and aren't currently part of the platform. If you misclicked, your best bet is to play on — chess is full of swindles, and even tough positions can be saved.
Draw offers are not currently a built-in button in the platform. Most draws happen automatically:
- Stalemate, insufficient material, fivefold repetition, 75-move rule → automatic draw. - Threefold repetition, 50-move rule → see How do I claim a draw?
