How does difficulty work when I play Dawn?
Endgame Society Dawn difficulty explained: 17 tiers, how moves are chosen, and how to pick the right level for you.
How does difficulty work when I play Dawn?
Dawn — your training partner — has seven distinct levels . Each one is calibrated to a target rating so you always get a fair, useful game.
Level Target Elo Personality --- --- --- Beginner 200 Dawn hangs pieces and misses simple tactics. Perfect for your very first games. Casual 400 Loose, friendly chess. Finds some ideas but gives you many chances. Intermediate 800 Solid play, won't punish small errors. A fair fight if you know the basics. Advanced 1400 Clean, principled. Capitalizes on blunders but doesn't set deep traps. Expert 1800 Sharp tactics and real pressure when you leave weaknesses. Master 2200 High-level positional and tactical play. Real resistance. Grandmaster 2500 Dawn at full strength. Reserved for serious testing — The Middlegame plan and above .
Under the hood, Dawn uses a chess engine with two knobs:
- Skill Level (0–20) controls how often the engine picks its best move vs. a weaker candidate. - Random move injection at the lowest tiers lets Dawn play below the engine's natural floor so brand-new players can win without Dawn looking glitchy.
The injector still avoids walking into mate-in-one, so games stay believable at every level.
- Before a game — pick the level on the Play page. - Mid-session — finish the current game, then start a new one at a different level.
- Pick a level where you lose about 1 in 3 games . That's the sweet spot for learning. - If you're winning every game, move up. - If you're losing 9 in 10 and the games feel one-sided, move down — there's no shame, and your puzzle rating will catch up faster.
