What happens if I lose connection during a game?
Your game waits, your clock keeps ticking, and you can resume from any device.
Live games run over a WebSocket connection. Brief drops are expected — here's exactly what happens.
What dropped What happens What you do --- --- --- WiFi blip clock allows Loss on time —
1. Open the app on any device. 2. The yellow banner "You have an active game" appears on every page. 3. Tap Resume — you land back on the board with the current position.
You can switch devices mid-game (phone → laptop, etc.) — your session moves with you.
Your time keeps ticking during a disconnect. We do this to prevent abuse (intentionally disconnecting to think). Your opponent is shown a "reconnecting" indicator on your name.
You see their reconnecting indicator. You can:
- Wait — most reconnects happen in under 30 seconds. - Claim victory on time — if they run out of clock, the win is awarded automatically. - Offer a draw — sometimes the friendly call when someone's clearly having a bad connection.
- Install the app to your home screen (guide) — it keeps the connection alive better than a browser tab. - On flaky WiFi, switch to mobile data for live games. - Corporate networks sometimes block WebSockets — see Why isn't the board or pieces loading?.
If your connection clearly failed (not just slow), contact support with the game URL within 48 hours. We can verify against server logs and adjust the result if our infrastructure was at fault.
