Zwischenzug — what it means in chess

A zwischenzug — an in-between move — is a reply the opponent did not account for, inserted before the move they were expecting. Instead of recapturing right away, you slip in a check or a larger threat first, forcing them to respond, and only then go back and recapture — often on better terms, sometimes winning outright. The German name has stuck because the idea is hard to see: the obvious recapture is still sitting there waiting, which is exactly why the in-between move slips past.
The zwischenzug is the move you didn't include in your calculation. Both players see the forced sequence — capture, recapture — and stop looking. The player who keeps looking one move further, and asks whether a check or a bigger threat can be squeezed in before the obvious recapture, is the one who wins the exchange. It shows up most often in queen swaps, in the middle of a tactical combination, and any time both sides are trading pieces on the same square. The habit to build is simple: after you see a forced recapture, spend one more moment asking, "Is there anything more forcing I can play first?"
