Stalemate is chess's great trapdoor: the player to move has no legal move and is not in check — and the game is a draw, instantly, whatever the material count says. The rule's two halves must both hold: an attacked king with no moves is checkmate and loses; an unattacked king with no moves is stalemate and escapes. The one-square difference between those outcomes has decided more half-points than any other rule in the game.
The demonstration above is the classic tragedy in its purest form — queen versus bare king, the most elementary win in chess, thrown away by a single natural-looking move that seals the last exit without attacking the prisoner. The practical rule every player drills from it: with a huge material edge against a lone king, check the stalemate before every move — a cornered king's legal moves are countable on one hand, and the count must never reach zero without a check attached.
