The Queen's Gambit Declined is classical chess's central pillar: Black keeps the pawn center intact with ...e6, accepts the temporarily bad light-squared bishop as the toll, and builds the soundest structure the defense to 1.d4 has ever produced. Every world champion has played it; several trusted their titles to it. Its education value is unmatched, because the QGD's themes are the classical curriculum — the fight for e4, the Carlsbad structure, the minority attack, the eternal bishop question.
The main treatments differ by how Black solves that bishop. The Orthodox setups develop patiently and free the bishop with a prepared central break; the Tartakower fianchettos it to b7 after ...b6, trading the wall for a diagonal; the Lasker simplifies with early piece trades, betting that fewer pieces mean a lighter cramp; and the Exchange Variation — White's principled try — fixes the structure early and aims the minority attack at Black's queenside for the next thirty moves. All of it is slow, honest chess where plans beat tricks, which is exactly why trainers have started students on the QGD for a hundred years.
