Promotion: the pawn reaches the eighth rank and must immediately become a queen, rook, bishop, or knight of its own color — its choice, regardless of what else is on the board. The new piece exists at full power from the moment it appears: this queen delivers check with its first breath. There is no waiting period, no restriction to captured pieces, and no upper limit — nine queens is legal, if unlikely. The humblest piece is the only one that can become another, which is why endgames are, at heart, arguments about promotion."]]

Promotion is the pawn's transformation: on reaching the final rank it must immediately become a queen, rook, bishop, or knight of its own color — the player's free choice, unrestricted by what has been captured, effective at full power the instant the new piece touches the board. The queen is chosen overwhelmingly, and the informal "queening" reflects it; the deliberate exceptions have their own page and their own logic.

The rule's gravity organizes the whole game backward from the final rank. A pawn is the least valuable piece on the board and simultaneously the only one carrying a queen inside it, and that dual nature is the engine of endgame play: passed pawns matter because promotion looms, kings activate to escort or arrest the walk, and whole material sacrifices are justified by a single pawn's arithmetic. "Every pawn is a potential queen" is the proverb; the endgame is where the potential collects.
