The Italian Game is among the oldest recorded openings in chess — it appears in the Göttingen manuscript, the earliest known work on the modern game — and still among the most played at every level: natural development aimed at the enemy king's tender point. The bishop on c4 stares at f7 — defended only by the king — and that pressure organizes everything that follows. It is the first opening most players learn because every move teaches a principle, and it never stops being respectable: the same position anchors elite rapid and blitz repertoires today.
Two temperaments share the position above. After ...Bc5 comes the Giuoco Piano — the "quiet game" — where modern practice favors the slow c3-and-d3 build, castling, and a long maneuvering middlegame that rewards patience and plan quality; this is where the opening earns its reputation as a positional education. After ...Nf6 instead, the Two Knights, the game can turn tactical immediately — the f7 pressure becomes concrete, sacrifices hang in the air, and both sides need real preparation. The Evans Gambit, White's b4 pawn offer against the Giuoco setup, adds a third, romantic option that trades material for time and open lines.
