The endgame is chess's third act: the phase after most pieces have left the board, when the play's character transforms — the king walks out of hiding and becomes a fighting piece, pawns grow toward their promotion squares, and precision replaces momentum as the deciding quality. No formal rule marks the border; the working definition is functional: the endgame has begun when the kings can participate safely, and everything about good play flows from noticing that moment one move before your opponent does.
The phase deserves its reputation as the game's truest test. Middlegame advantages are arguments; endgame advantages are arithmetic — an extra pawn, a more active king, a better minor piece resolve into concrete, calculable outcomes, and the margins are unforgiving in both directions: technique converts small edges into full points, and one imprecision converts winning positions into theoretical draws that a prepared defender holds forever. This is why endgame study returns more rating per hour than any other work: the positions recur, the answers are knowable, and most opponents have skipped the homework.
