What a Chess Academy Actually Teaches You
A chess academy's real product isn't lessons — it's the order they come in. Why sequencing beats content, and where I'd start if I were starting over.
When I typed "chess academy near me" into a search bar years ago, I already knew what I'd find. A photo of children at long tables, a wall of trophies, a schedule of Saturday sessions I was twenty years too old to sit in.
I wasn't a kid with a coach and a rating goal. I was an adult who grew up playing my family across a kitchen table, never titled, still curious, and increasingly frustrated that I couldn't seem to get better no matter how much chess I did. The word "academy" was not built for me, and I resented that a little.
So I want to argue something about what that word should mean. Because the thing that finally moved my game had nothing to do with trophies, and almost nothing to do with the lessons themselves.
Most programs selling themselves as a chess academy are selling content. A video library. A puzzle set. A repertoire download. Chess.com's lessons, the various remote academies, the branded courses with a titled name on the cover — they all deliver material, and much of that material is good.
But content is not the scarce thing anymore. It hasn't been for years. There are more free lessons on lichess.org than any human could finish in a decade, and they cost nothing.
So if content is free and infinite, what is an academy actually for?
Here is my claim, and everything below defends it: a chess academy is worthless if it only hands you material. The one thing that separates a real academy from a pile of puzzles is a structured path — something that tells you, on a Tuesday, what to work on next, and why, and what comes after it.
