I played my first Greek Gift because it was beautiful. A bishop crashes into h7, the king is dragged out into the open, and the queen comes screaming across the board. I had seen it in a book, I recognized the shape on my own board, and I played it on feeling.

I lost a bishop for nothing. The king walked to safety, my attack ran out of pieces, and I sat there down material wondering what I'd done wrong.

What I'd done wrong was mistake the greek gift sacrifice for a thing you see . It isn't. It's a thing you build , and if you can't already picture the whole sequence — the knight landing on g5, the queen reaching h5, the mate at h7 — before your bishop ever touches that pawn, then you don't have a gift. You have a blunder with good manners.

The move order I say out loud before I ever touch the bishop

Here is the dream, the version everyone falls in love with. White gives the bishop on h7, checks the king into the open, brings the knight to g5 with check, and swings the queen to h5. Against the wrong defense, it's mate on h7 with the knight guarding the queen.

I make myself narrate the whole line before I commit. Bishop takes h7, king takes bishop, knight to g5 with check, and now — this is the part that matters — where does the king go? If I can't answer that question for every legal king move, I'm not ready to play the first move. The sacrifice is only as sound as my worst unanswered reply.
