The Chess Words I Had to Look Up First
The twenty or so chess terms you actually need — pieces, en passant and castling, then structure — learned in the order a real game hands them to you.
When I came back to chess as an adult, I could move the pieces fine. I'd played with my family for years. What I couldn't do was follow a conversation about a game.
People said things like isolated queen's pawn and he's just up the exchange and watch the en passant the way you'd say the weather. I nodded along and quietly wrote the words down to look up later. There were a lot of words.
Here is what I wish someone had told me then: you don't need a hundred chess terms. You need maybe twenty, and every one of them names something you are already doing on the board without a word for it. The problem is never the list. The problem is the order the list is usually in.
Why alphabetical is the worst order for chess terms
Every glossary I found was alphabetical. Backward pawn sits next to battery sits next to Benko Gambit , and those three things have nothing to do with each other. You meet them in completely different parts of a game, if you meet them at all.
So you read the list, you retain nothing, and worse, you start confusing categories. You think a pin and a weak square are the same kind of thing because they were both on the same page. They are not. One is a tactic — something that happens in a handful of moves. The other is strategy — something that sits there for the whole game and slowly matters.
The words actually cluster by phase. First you need the pieces. Then a small set of legal-move oddities that the basic rules skipped. Then, once games get real, the words for structure. Learn them phase by phase and they stop being a list. They start being a description of what you're looking at.
