The Center Counter Is Just the Scandinavian

The Center Counter and the Scandinavian are one opening. Why the early queen move you were taught to fear — and the ...Qa5 retreat — is the whole point.

For an embarrassingly long time, I thought the Center Counter and the Scandinavian were two different openings. I'd see the first name in an old book, the second in a new one, and I filed them apart in my head like two dresses from two seasons that happened to share a silhouette. I never checked. Why would I? They had different names.

They are the same opening. 1.e4 d5. That's it. That's the whole thing, and I spent years not quite seeing it because nobody sat me down and said the two words point at one move.

Once I understood that, the opening finally made sense to me — and so did the thing everyone warns you about.

The older English-language name is the Center Counter, sometimes written Center Counter Defense. You meet 1.e4 by striking straight back at the center with 1...d5, countering in the middle rather than around the edges. The name describes the intent: a counter, in the center. Plain and literal.

The name that stuck everywhere else is the Scandinavian, after the northern players who kept the line alive when much of the chess world had written it off. Same board, same pawn on d5, same reply to White's very first move.

So if you've been quietly wondering whether the Center Counter is somehow a variation of the Scandinavian, or a cousin of it, or a slightly worse version — it isn't any of those. It's the identical opening wearing an older label. The confusion is entirely in the naming, never in the moves.

The core line: 1.e4 d5 2.exd5 Qxd5 3.Nc3

Here is where most people flinch. Black plays 1...d5, White takes with 2.exd5, and Black recaptures with the queen — 2...Qxd5. Then White develops a knight to c3, hitting the queen, and Black has to move her again.
