For a long time, playing Black felt like arriving at a party someone else had planned. White moves first, White picks the room, and I was left reacting — trying to look composed while I figured out where I was supposed to stand.

What changed wasn't that I got braver. It was that I stopped choosing openings by their reputation and started choosing them by their plan. The best chess openings for Black, I've come to think, aren't the ones with the shiniest win rate. They're the ones whose middlegame you already understand before the middlegame arrives.

That's the whole argument here. Everything else is just me showing you the pieces I actually reach for.

What I mean when I say an opening 'fits'

A well-cut coat doesn't make you look good in the mirror. It makes you move well all day without thinking about it. You forget you're wearing it, which is the point.

An opening fits the same way. It's not about the first six moves — you can memorize those from anyone. It's about move fifteen, when the book runs out and you're alone with a position. If you know what you're trying to do there — which pawn break you're aiming for, which piece you're happy to trade, which side of the board is yours — the opening fits. If you're staring at a structure you got by rote and have no idea what it wants from you, it doesn't, no matter how many strong players swear by it.

This is why I distrust every top-three list I've ever read. They sort by aggression or by engine approval, and both of those are properties of the position. Neither is a property of you . And the opening has to fit you.
