How Your Rating Works: The Endgame Society Elo System, Explained

How chess Elo ratings actually work — expected scores, K-factors, and why your rating swings the way it does — using the Endgame Society system.

Every rated game on Endgame Society ends the same way: the board clears, and a number moves. Sometimes it jumps thirty points. Sometimes it barely shifts. Sometimes — after a game against Dawn, or a casual game with a friend — it doesn't move at all.

This is the plain explanation of what that number is, how we calculate it, and why we built it the way we did. By the end, you'll understand the entire system. There's nothing underneath this article. That's deliberate.

Your rating is an estimate of your playing strength relative to everyone else in the same pool. Nothing more. It isn't a score you accumulate, it isn't a reward for showing up, and it isn't a judgment of how hard you're working. It's a running guess that gets a little sharper every time you play a rated game.

The system doing the guessing is Elo — the same method, at its core, that has ranked chess players since Arpad Elo designed it for the U.S. Chess Federation in 1960. We run it in a form any club player of the last sixty years would recognize, and every constant in it is printed below.

You begin at 1200 in each pool. That's not a claim about your strength — it's the system admitting it knows nothing about you yet.

For your first 30 rated games in a pool, your rating is marked Calibrating and shown with a question mark. During that window the system moves your number in deliberately bigger strokes, because early on, each result carries real information about who you are. The badge and the faster adjustment end together, at the same game. When the question mark disappears, the training wheels are genuinely off — not just hidden.
