Playing like a pro isn't memorizing more or calculating faster. It's one quiet habit — asking what your opponent wants before every move.

The first time I played someone rated four hundred points above me, I expected to be outcalculated. Deep lines. Traps I couldn't see coming. Some brilliance I'd only understand afterward.

What actually happened was quieter than that. She just never let me do anything. Every plan I started, she'd already answered a move ago. Nothing flashy. She wasn't calculating faster than me. She was looking somewhere I wasn't.

That game is the reason I stopped believing the pitch. Everyone selling you "how to play chess like a pro" means the same two things: memorize more theory, calculate faster. I think it's almost the opposite. Playing like a strong player is a matter of slowing down and adopting a few plain, unglamorous habits that titled players never turn off — starting with one that costs no calculation whatsoever.

What 'like a pro' actually means once you stop watching highlight reels

The highlights lie to you. You see the queen sacrifice, the mating net that appears out of nowhere, and you conclude that strong play is about seeing further than everyone else.

Some of it is. But the sacrifices you clip and share are maybe two percent of a strong player's actual moves. The other ninety-eight are ordinary. A rook lifted to a better file. A knight rerouted over three moves to a square where it does more. A pawn held back because pushing it would create a weakness nobody would exploit for twenty moves — except the person across the board would.

That's the part no one films. It isn't a highlight because nothing happens. And "nothing happens" is exactly what a strong player is trying to arrange when it's your turn to have ideas.
